Area Four

MargheritaI finally made it to Area Four after hearing and reading so many good things about it. I was super intrigued by their pizza dough being made with sourdough starter and their Woodstone oven with three separate heat sources, but would it live up to my beloved Posto?

I went in knowing that this wouldn’t be the same exact style of pizza as Posto. The pizza menu is fairly simple, which I like, with all the classics like margherita, sausage, and pepperoni, plus some more interesting combinations like clam and bacon. Area Four’s beer list certainly has the edge over Posto’s. (Posto hasn’t been the same since they stopped serving Baby Tree on draft!)

Ok, I’ll stop with the comparisons now. Onto the food…

Garlic Knots

We started with the Garlic Knots Supreme, which was a generous serving of their normal garlic knots topped with tomato sauce and cheese. It’s almost unfair to judge a dish like this. How could it possibly be bad? It was a little hard to actually taste anything but the garlic in the garlic knots underneath all of the sauce and cheese, but no complaints here. We happily devoured them.

Margherita

We split a couple of pizzas, the first being the Margherita with mozzarella, tomato, pecorino, and basil. While I did enjoy this pizza overall, and found the balance of cheese and tomatoes to be just right, I thought the crust was a little heavy. It had a wonderful sourdough flavor, but more chew than I’m used to.

Spring Vegetable Pizza

We also ordered the Spring Vegetable Pizza with spring onion sauce, arugula, asparagus and peas (we went without the bacon listed on the menu). I could only really taste the peas and arugula, which isn’t a horrible thing, but I was hoping for more flavor out of the spring onion sauce. I also generally prefer tomato based pizzas, so the Margherita was my definite favorite of the two.

Strawberry and Cherry Crisp

We split a Strawberry and Cherry Crisp for dessert. This and the garlic knots tied for my favorites of the evening. There was nothing particularly interesting or unusual about the crisp; It was just well executed and comforting.

I honestly can’t decide how I feel about Area Four. I might need to try it again and see if I can get myself to appreciate their type of pizza crust. Maybe I just am and always will be a Neapolitan pizza girl?
