I became hooked on running after the B.A.A. Half Marathon last fall. Training for it was at times torturous, and I even regretted signing up at some points. I could barely run two miles at the time I started.

Once I finally built up my endurance and made it through those long training runs, the actual race was almost fun. Being able to do something that I never thought was possible was incredibly rewarding. I even put myself in the lottery for the New York City marathon this fall after watching Matt run it last year. I find out in three days if I got in!

Even though the marathon is up in the air, I did sign up for the B.A.A. Distance Medley, which includes a 5K and 10K leading up to the half marathon in October. The 5K was last Sunday, the day before the Boston Marathon. A bonus of the 5K was that we got to finish at the actual Boston Marathon finish line. (A girl can dream.)

My goal for the half marathon last year was to run the entire distance, no matter how slow. This year, however, I’m about speed. Given that this was actually my first ever 5K race, I didn’t really have a time I wanted to beat. I was just determined to run as fast as possible.

I didn’t take into account that we would be running with 6,000 other people, making it a very slow starting race. They only had signs for the 6 and 7 minute paces (and I know I’m not that fast) and left the rest of us to organize ourselves. I managed to finish in 25:59 at an 8:22 pace. For me, that is not bad!

Katie, Matt, and I were left wondering what to do when we finished at around 8:30am. Like any normal people would do after running a race, we decided to walk the 5 miles back to Matt’s and my apartment in Somerville, assuming we would find a brunch place along the way. By then, we figured, something would be open. And by something, I mean a restaurant serving brunch drinks.

We decided on brunch at Russell House Tavern in Harvard Square. It’s been up there on my list to try for awhile now.

I started with a mimosa. So refreshing after all that running and walking! (Sorry for the blurry iphone pictures.)

I was starving by this point, so the R. House Grass Fed Burger jumped out at me. It was topped with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and bacon and served on an english muffin. They offer the genius option of getting half salad – half fries on the side. I’m glad I opted for both because the fries were incredible.

The burger itself was simply seasoned and perfectly cooked to medium-rare. The patty itself was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. I found that the toppings really overwhelmed the burger though. The patty was topped with 3 or 4 slices of cheddar, a large mound of caramelized onions, and bacon. The english muffin was way too small to hold everything together. I solved the problem by taking off a lot of the cheese and onions (but leaving most of the bacon, obviously). It was messy, but I enjoyed it.

Matt ordered the American Egg Plate with fried eggs, home fries, and a biscuit. He actually asked for a croissant but didn’t complain when they gave him the biscuit instead. He seemed to enjoy it. I had a bite of the biscuit and thought it had a nice texture, but could have used some salt.

Katie ordered the Hickory Smoked Pork Loin Sandwich. It had slow roasted pork loin, cheddar, apple, crispy onions, and a maple ginger aioli. The sandwich also ended up having bacon in it, which Katie didn’t think was necessary with the pork loin. Other than that, she was a big fan.

This was just the type of meal we needed after our morning of running and walking. I’m intrigued enough to try their dinner menu!
