Chez Henri

Cuban Sandwich

I have a rule that I’ll only buy a Groupon (or similar deal) if its for a restaurant I actually wanted to try before seeing the deal. That doesn’t happen very often, so I jumped at the Chez Henri deal offered over the summer. Their French-Cuban menu always intrigued me, and I had been dying to try their famous Cuban Sandwich.

My mom also loves a good Cuban sandwich, so we turned it into a mother-daughter date the weekend after Thanksgiving. Because the Groupon was good for $50 worth of food, we got to try several things off the menu. Sitting at the bar allowed us to share a combination of items off of the regular and bar menus. I was very happy to see they have a special bar menu, given that I generally prefer sitting at the bar over a table in the dining room anyways.

Conch Fritters

The Conch Fritters were served with a guava barbecue sauce and chipotle aioli. I couldn’t believe how fluffy and light the fritters were. The conch flavor was subtle, but there, and I loved the sweet and spicy sauces.

Escargot Bourgogne

The star of the Escargot Bourgogne was the buttery garlic, parsley, and pernod sauce that pooled at the bottom of each escargot. My only complaint is that they could have used a little more salt.

Duck Tamale

The Duck Tamale on Spinach Salad, lightly dressed with a warm bacon and mustard dressing, was full of crisp, meaty lardons. The tamale was stuffed with tender duck, and I loved eating it with the lightly dressed spinach.

Cuban Sandwich

As I expected, the star of the show was the Pressed Cuban Sandwich. Whenever I order a Cuban sandwich, this is what I envision (but it’s never as good). It had a thin layer of slow roasted pork, a thin layer of ham, and enough cheese to hold it all together. The way it was cooked made the cheese perfectly melted and the bread thin and crisp. The pickles and mustard balanced out the richness. Overall, it was a perfect sandwich.

I was impressed with Chez Henri. I can’t speak for the dining room entrees, but I’d certainly go back to the bar and order the Cuban Sandwich.

That sounds like a really good groupon rule of thumb! Whenever I have the chance to go to Chez Henri, I always prefer the bar menu. That Cuban sandwich is amazing! I havent tried many of the other items you ordered but it’s a good excuse to go back 🙂

Love your photos! I bought the Chez Henri groupon too, but I haven’t used it yet. I grew up hearing about this restaurant from my mother so I’m psyched to try it. I’ll definitely have to get that Cuban sandwich!
