Matcha, Mango, and Ginger Smoothie

The February issue of Bon Appetit this year featured several recipes using matcha. Matcha is essentially green tea powder, but it’s supposedly even healthier than brewed green tea because you consume the entire green tea leaf.

I spotted it at my local Japanese market recently and didn’t think twice before putting it in my basket.

I became fascinated by all of its potential uses. Even thought I had originally bought it to try this simple Matcha Latte, the woman at the checkout suggested I use it in cocktails. I posted about it on my Facebook page and someone suggested I try putting it in a Bee’s Knees cocktail (gin, honey, and lemon juice). So far, I’ve only tried it in non-alcohol form, but I promise I will try that soon and report back.

This matcha, mango, and ginger smoothie was a complete experiment. In an effort to avoid afternoon iced coffee (I already have plenty in the morning), I wanted to turn the matcha into a cold, afternoon pick-me-up. I had some frozen mango chunks in the freezer and thought that would go nicely with the green tea flavor. I love ginger in my cocktails, so I added a bit to give the smoothie a little kick. Instead of almond milk, my go-to for smoothies, I went with greek yogurt for more protein and body.

Full disclosure: When I started blending, I saw its murky green color and thought “this might be gross.” Well, to say I was wrong would be an understatement. My mind was blown. It was amazing. And it tasted like dessert, not a health drink.

Yield: 1 16-ounce smoothie

Matcha, Mango, and Ginger Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon matcha
  • 3/4 cups water
  • 3/4 cups frozen mango chunks
  • 1/2 cup plain 2% greek yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced or grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 tablespoon honey (adjust sweetener to taste)

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Notes

The ginger flavor in this is subtle, so feel free to add more if you'd like.
