Philly Eats: Matyson

I know it’s a little after the fact, but I didn’t want to leave out the best meal we had all weekend in Philly during marathon weekend.

Matyson, another small BYOB, was one of my favorites when I lived in Philly. While the food can get a little pricey, I remember loving everything I had ever tried there (and saving money on wine was a huge plus). It was also way too convenient being only two blocks from my old apartment!

I didn’t know what to expect going back after not having been there for years and years, but I was totally blown away. It was even better than I remembered.

Cauliflower Soup

I started with the Cauliflower Soup with black garlic, grapes, curry, and mint. The thick, creamy base was enhanced by all the different textures and flavors of the toppings, and the black garlic paste gave an unexpected (but awesome) flavor when stirred in. It was delicious and really fun to eat.

Shaved Tuscan Kale

We shared the Shaved Tuscan Kale Salad with quinoa, fermented squash, pepitas, and parmesan. It had a lot going on, but every component added something special to this salad. (I’m glad I’m finally writing about this, because it reminds me that I want to recreate this at home!)

Niman Ranch Pork Tenderloin

I ordered the Niman Ranch Pork Tenderloin with potato, coffee, broccolini, chorizo, and pickled onion. It was beautifully presented and, like the other dishes, each component was perfectly cooked and it all just worked beautifully together.

Long Island Duck Breast

My mom and her friend Candace both ordered the Long Island Duck Breast with smoked coconut curry, leek, sweet potato, and bitter chocolate. When they both claimed this was the best duck they had ever had, I of course had to try a bite. They were right – it was phenomenal.

Almond Tart

We all shared the Almond Tart with caramel ice cream and dried apricot compote for dessert. I’m not easily blown away by desserts, but this one was very memorable. At the time I remember likening it to an upscale pecan pie, which is one of my all time favorite desserts.

This was basically my ideal type of meal out: flavor combinations that I wouldn’t think of myself, but also perfectly executed. Matyson definitely exceeded my expectations!
