Madrid, 1/8/12

Our last day in Madrid! We had kind of slacked off on doing the touristy things in Madrid, so that’s what we did on our last day. We got up early and went to the Reina Sofia museum. From there, we walked all the way over to the Rastro, Madrid’s Sunday flea market. After being [read more →]

Matt and I gave in and ate pizza for lunch on Saturday. We had been craving it! We actually found a pretty decent Neapolitan style pizza place while wandering around called Fratelli La Bufala. It was no Motorino or Posto, but certainly passable. We decided to actually eat dinner at Mercato San Miguel that night. [read more →]

January 6th is Kings Day, which we were told is as important as Christmas in the US. We were worried about things being open, but there were actually a lot of people out! We started the day with a slice of Roscon de Reyes, the typical pastry served on kings day. This is the only [read more →]

After my mom left for the airport, Matt and I went to check into our hotel downtown. This day wasn’t too eventful; we mostly relaxed, napped, and wandered around. We went back to Tempranillo for dinner. The grilled mushrooms we ordered were pretty insane. I’m not sure what type they were, but they looked like [read more →]

After our last night in Haro, we woke up early to drive back to Madrid. We also stopped along the way in Burgos for lunch and to do some shopping. The lunch wasn’t very memorable, so I didn’t take any pictures. This was my mom’s last night in Spain, but we were all pretty exhausted [read more →]

Haro, 1/3/12

We had wine tours scheduled at R. Lopez de Heredia and Muga for the 3rd, but also wanted to swing by La Rioja Alta and Cune which were basically on the same street. Haro is quite a wine town! We got up bright and early (for me) for our 10am R. Lopez de Heredia tour. [read more →]

Haro, 1/2/12

This was the day we drove up to Haro in Rioja for our mini wine tour. We were SO looking forward to this part of the trip. The drive up took about four hours, and we saw a double rainbow along the way! My mom had been feeling sick all day, so Matt and I [read more →]

Madrid, 1/1/12

We were invited back to Louis and Nieves house for a family new years lunch. The food was amazing again, but Matt and I were so tired. Lunch consisted of another big salad, more foie gras and bread, and a rice dish similar to paella. For dessert, their son Alvaro made individual molten chocolate cakes. [read more →]

New Years Eve! We made another reservation at La Trucha for New Years Eve lunch. They had so many vegetarian options and more things that we wanted to try, so we wanted to go there with Matt. We started with the fried eggplant. It was very lightly battered and super crispy.

Madrid, 12/30/11

We spent most of Matt’s first full day in Madrid just wandering around. We eventually ended up back at Nuevo Galicia. We opted to just split a bunch of things off of the menu instead of getting the menu del dia. We tried the pimientos de padron. They were tasty, as usual, but we were [read more →]

Madrid, 12/29/11

This was the day that Matt arrived! He wasn’t arriving until around 5:00 though, so my mom and I made lunch reservations at a restaurant she used to go to called La Trucha. We ordered a small pitcher of their house red wine, which came in this cute little ceramic jug. The wine wasn’t great, [read more →]

Madrid, 12/28/11

While out with Cheryl and Miguel the night before, we made lunch reservations for late afternoon on Wednesday at a restaurant called El Ñeru. They said that this restaurant had the best fabada (an Asturian bean stew) and arroz con leche in town. Since lunch wasn’t until 3:15 (which we quickly learned is normal for [read more →]

Madrid, 12/27/11

I had intended on blogging on Spain while I was there, but as you can see that only lasted one day. Oops! We got pretty busy between spending time with family friends, exploring Madrid, and our side trip to Rioja. Oh well, I’m going to continue on anyways. On the 27th, my mom and I [read more →]

Madrid, 12/26/11

After spending Christmas Eve and Christmas day with family friends, we used yesterday to explore Madrid. My mom and I wandered around starting at the Puerta del Sol and ended up at one of her old favorite tapas restaurants on Calle Serrano. Here are some quick highlights. We spent some time exploring the Mercato de [read more →]
