Union Square Donuts

The thought of a maple bacon donut got me out of bed and to Union Square bright and early on Saturday morning. Union Square Donuts just opened in February, and its random location next to the highway on the east side of Union Square and lack of seating don’t seem to be deterring anyone. It has already become so popular that they run out of donuts within hours of opening. We tried five of the six flavors that were remaining when we got there.

Maple Bacon Donut

The hyped Maple Bacon donut did not disappoint. The addictive sweet-salty combination was well-balanced, not straying too far in either direction. The dough was incredible: pillowy and light, and not at all greasy. The thick cut bacon was strategically placed all around the donut so that every bite was perfect.

Chipotle Chocolate Donut

The Chipotle Chocolate looked like a typical chocolate frosted donut, but each bite packed a smoky and spicy punch at the end. As a spice lover, this was definitely a favorite.

Honey Almond Donut

I found the Honey Almond to be tasty, though a little too sweet to have more than a couple of bites.

Cinnamon Roll

The Cinnamon Roll was good, but not a standout. It had some tough competition!

Vanilla Bean Donut

And finally, the Vanilla Bean donut. It had the perfect level of sweetness, and you could see the little black specks of vanilla in the glaze.

Overall, I was really impressed with everything I tried. I especially recommend the maple bacon, the chipotle chocolate, and the vanilla bean, though you can’t really go wrong with any donut at Union Square Donuts.
