Zuppardi’s Apizza

Zuppardi'sTrying New Haven style pizza has been on my list for quite some time. It seemed easy enough to knock off the list since it’s on the way to New York City and I tend to go there about once a month…except that lately I’ve been traveling by bus. If only BoltBus stopped for New Haven pizza instead of Arby’s or Burger King…

Anyways, driving back to Boston from Philly seemed like the perfect time to finally stop in New Haven. Our car research taught us that there are a few very famous places (like Pepe’s and Sally’s), but Zuppardi’s is a little more off the beaten path and just as good (if not better). Zuppardi’s is actually located in West Haven, and they are particularly famous for their freshly shucked clam pizza. Even though I had never tried clams on pizza before, the idea made complete sense in my head. I was giddy about finally being able to try it.

We didn’t get to Zuppardi’s until around 2:00 for lunch, so we were the only people in the restaurant. The co-owner chatted with us for a bit when we told her we had made a special stop there on our road trip. She was incredibly friendly, and you could tell she was genuinely proud of their pizza. She also seemed pleased with our order choices: half plain/half mozzarella for Matt, and one sausage and one fresh clams pizza for my mom and me to share. She warned us that the fresh clams pizza takes a little longer than the rest because they have to shuck the raw clams to order, and we were perfectly happy to wait.

Plain/Mozz Pizza

Matt’s Half Plain/Half Mozzarella Pizza arrived first. The “plain” side had tomato sauce and a dusting of grated Romano cheese. He couldn’t decide which side he liked best, but he enjoyed every last bite of each.

Sausage Pizza

I was smitten when the Sausage Pizza arrived. My first instinct was to pick off one of the huge hunks of homemade sausage artfully scattered over the pizza – I couldn’t resist. Once I got past how amazing the sausage was, I was onto the pizza itself. The crust was very thin but with a light crunch, so it held up to the toppings well. It was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had, and definitely the best sausage pizza I’ve ever had.

Fresh Clams Pizza

Not too long after the sausage, the Clam Pizza arrived. Other than the clams, I think it only had garlic, olive oil and parsley. Its simplicity was perfect. The juices from the tender clams oozed onto the pie, giving every bite salty briny goodness. It was well worth the wait.
